About Combined Asthma & Anaphylaxis

This Life Saving Course is just $60. The purpose of this anaphylaxis first aid course is to develop the skills and knowledge to assist a casualty suffering a severe allergic reaction, by the administration of the casualty’s own adrenalin supply through a controlled dose injecting device (Epipen), until the arrival of medical assistance.

In addition this anaphylaxis first aid course develops skills in the recognition, management, prevention and risk minimisation strategies related to allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, providing the outcomes required to develop and implement a management plan to reduce the risk of severe reactions in individuals diagnosed with anaphylaxis.

The course will equip staff and carers with a knowledge ofanaphylaxis to enable them to maintain a safe and healthy environment in which a person at risk of anaphylaxis can participate equally in all aspects of the workplace and recreational activities, including children’s services,  programs and schools.

Participants must complete the two units of competency satisfactorily:

The unit incorporates the content of units

  • Provide first aid management of sever allergic reactions and anaphylaxis - VBP434
  • Develop risk minimisation and management strategies for allergic reaction and anaphylaxis - APAU320

Course Content

  • Assess the situation (for anaphylaxis)
  • Provide appropriate first aid treatment for anaphylactic reaction
  • Communicate details of the incident
  • Evaluate first aid response to anaphylactic reaction
  • Identify individuals at risk of allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
  • Develop individual’s anaphylaxis management plans
  • Implement strategies to prevent allergic and anaphylactic reactions
  • Develop and implement a communication plan to raise awareness of allergic reactions and anaphylaxis

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no pre-requisites or co-requisites for this competency unit.

COURSE DURATION

2 hours face to face training. Refresher course 2 hours. Recommended to update every 12 months.

ASSESSMENT

Participants must be able to demonstrate theoretical knowledge with the practical skills.
  • Practical exercise- how to use an EpiPen and scenario based
  • workbook – written answer and multiple choice
  • group activities and questions

AWARD

Upon successful completion of course, participants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for 'Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis 22099VIC'

This accredited short course meets the requirements of the Victorian Department of Education (DEECD) and Early Childhood Development for staff working in schools and children services.
