Manual Handling Course Overview

Officially known as HLTWHS005 Conduct Manual Tasks Safely, Manual Handling Courses teach individuals about any kind of task which involves relocating heavy loads and requires a person to lift, lower, push, pull, or carry heavy objects.

Manual handling activities are prevalent across a wide variety of different industries, careers, and job descriptions. Proper manual handling training is useful for any workplace, but is particularly essential for working in warehouses, supermarkets, offices, and especially in healthcare where it is required to safely move patients. There are few workplaces where a manual handling certification is not beneficial in some way.

First Aid Pro offers a manual handling training course which is nationally accredited and endorsed by the Australian College of Nursing. All students are welcome to enrol in this course and improve their skills, knowledge, and professional opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Manual handling?

While the specific duties of manual handling depend on the workplace in which it is performed, generally speaking, manual handling involves the movement of heavy loads in any kind of physical work environment. This movement, whether executed using the human body or mechanical aids, requires careful consideration to prevent workplace injuries.

Good manual handling involves minimizing the use of high or sudden force, avoiding unexpected movements, and ensuring sustained force is kept at safe levels. This is achieved through proper planning, risk assessments, and the implementation of risk control measures.

What Is a Hazardous Manual Task?

A hazardous manual task refers to any activity that requires a person to use force, perform repetitive movements, adopt awkward postures, or be exposed to sustained vibration. These tasks have the potential to cause injury or harm to the musculoskeletal system. Identifying and managing hazardous manual tasks are crucial to ensuring the health and safety of workers. This involves regular risk assessments to control the use of high or sudden force, prevent unexpected movements, and ensure sustained force is within acceptable limits.

What Are The Safe Work Procedures For Manual Handling?

Safe work procedures for manual handling include using proper lifting techniques, utilizing mechanical aids when available, maintaining good posture, taking regular breaks, and seeking assistance when necessary. These procedures are designed to minimize the risk of injuries during manual handling tasks by controlling the use of high or sudden force, preventing unexpected movements, and ensuring sustained force is kept at safe levels.

Do I Need a Manual Handling Certificate?

While a manual handling certificate is not a strict requirement for many careers, it is highly beneficial. The necessity of manual handling training is often determined by individual organisations, with some professions like plumbing and electrical work requiring certification. Undertaking a manual handling assessment is advantageous for most jobs, demonstrating commitment to work health and safety.

This is especially important in roles involving potentially hazardous manual tasks, where the risk of injury is higher than usual.

How Long Does a Manual Handling Certificate Last for in Australia?

In some places in Australia, a manual handling certificate remains valid for two (2) years.

Regardless of expiry, manual handling refresher training is recommended every two to three years, ideally annually. This proactive approach helps in preventing chronic pain, avoiding acute pain, and ensuring sustained force levels are within safe limits through regular risk assessments.

Do You Offer Manual Handling Refresher Training?

Yes, we offer manual handling refresher training to individuals and organisations. Our refresher courses are designed to reinforce key principles, update participants on any relevant changes in regulations, and refresh their skills in safe manual handling practices.

Regular refresher training is essential for maintaining a safe working environment and preventing workplace injuries. This includes controlling the use of high or sudden force, preventing unexpected movements, and ensuring sustained force remains at safe levels through ongoing risk assessments.

What Is Manual Handling in Aged Care?

Manual handling in aged care encompasses the physical tasks associated with the care and assistance of elderly individuals, including lifting, transferring, and supporting them in various activities.

The training provided in aged care focuses on equipping healthcare professionals and caregivers with the knowledge and skills needed to perform these tasks safely. This reduces the risk of injury for both the care provider and the individual receiving care. The emphasis is on minimizing chronic pain through proper techniques, avoiding acute pain by preventing unexpected movements, and conducting regular risk assessments to ensure sustained force remains at acceptable levels.

What Is HLTWHS005 Conduct Manual Tasks Safely Standard?

HLTWS005 Conduct Manual Tasks Safely is a standard providing guidelines for safe manual handling practices. It emphasizes hazard identification, risk assessment, and control measures to prevent injuries. Adhering to this standard helps in minimizing the use of high or sudden force, preventing unexpected movements, and ensuring sustained force is at safe levels.

What Is HLTWHS005 Manual Handling Training For Nurses And Aged Care Workers?

HLTWS005 Manual Handling Training for Nurses and Aged Care Workers is a specific program designed to educate healthcare professionals about safe manual handling tasks in nursing and aged care settings.
